Atago Sakura Project has started! Raising seedlings held (2019.07.16)

Sakura Symposium

Lecturer Mr. Inoue

Specimen commentary

On Mt. Atago, there is a stone monument that says that 360 "Yoshino cherry trees" (Yoshino cherry tree) were donated in 1918 (Taisho 7). Since that time, Atagoyama has been one of the famous cherry blossom spots in the city, and many people visited during the flowering season. Although it is still regarded as a famous place for cherry blossoms today, there are about 160 cherry trees left in the entire mountain, centering on Sakurazaka (the approach to Kannondenji) and Atagoyama sightseeing road (the motorway on the north side). I'm sorry. Even so, the growth of evergreen trees obstructs the sunshine, and many are in a severe condition on the verge of death. In addition, there is a subspecies of wild cherry tree on Mt. Atago, and a native species called Tsukushiyama cherry tree, which is endemic to this area, has barely survived, but all of them are dying.
Under these circumstances, the Association for the Protection of Atago Forest and Greenery will increase and revive the cherry blossoms of Mt. Atago by the hands of the citizens, and it will also use endemic species to make Mt. Atago a "village of wild cherry blossoms". We decided to launch the "Atago Sakura Project" aiming for. As the first step, we held the "Atago Sakura Symposium" on June 8th with the aim of getting to know and learn about Sakura and Tsukushiyamazakura (left image).

In addition, on July 7, we worked on making cuttings to grow horsetail saplings (image below). Mr. Yoichi Kai of Fukuoka Landscaping, who is also a tree doctor, gave me guidance on cutting work, and he taught me the know-how in detail.

It takes two and a half to three and a half years to grow a sapling up to a size that can be planted. In this day's efforts, more than 200 cuttings will be made, and participants will take them home and work on long-term seedling raising work. However, the ratio of cuttings to root safely without dying is 80 to 90% for cutting specialists, about 50% for gardeners, and at most 10 to 20% for inexperienced amateurs. It is said that. But first of all, it was a start, and it was the first step.

Horsetail saplings are not commercially available species, unlike Yoshino cherry trees. For the twigs that are the source of the cuttings, we used the ones that were collected from the first-year branches that have not yet been wooded and that grow from the native Tsukushiyama cherry tree. However, it is surprisingly difficult even for experts to distinguish between wild cherry blossoms and their subspecies, Tsukushiyama cherry blossoms, so even experts have to distinguish them for each harvested tree, and where individual cuttings grow. I decided to manage it properly so that I could see what was taken from the tree.

I took a walk in the forest of Atago   (2019.05.28)

Scenery of the exploration road
The Atago Forest and Greenery Association is currently working on the establishment of a project called "Atago Forest Exploration Road" where you can enjoy Atago Forest. As part of this project, we held an exploration session on the planned exploration route course on Saturday, May 25th. In this initiative, the aim is to actually walk the part of the planned exploration route that goes around the forest (EG in the map) and find out what kind of exploration route should be used in the future. There was also. In addition, it was a plan to hear explanations about the plants that we meet while walking in the forest.
The weather was fine on that day, and the temperature was record high from the morning, but when I entered the forest, the heat disappeared somewhere and it was refreshing. The course was still undeveloped and the scaffolding was quite poor, but it was well received by the participants that it was surrounded by deep green and I could touch the trees with my skin.
We are planning to proceed with the development of the exploration route in earnest, but most of the course in the forest that we took a walk this time was once used as a road, and in some places the stone steps that are the remnants of it are half buried. It is left. In the maintenance, I am hoping that such a new "excavation" of the "remains" will be possible.

Don't steal! Please take a picture     (2019.05.05)

Unfortunately, the gentian was broken and thrown away. Gentiana blooms pretty and beautiful flowers in this season, but at Atagoyama has decreased rapidly in the last few years and is in a critically endangered state. Especially this year, we couldn't confirm the number of one-third of last year. However, some of them were stolen and failed to be taken, and one of them was miserably thrown away. This kind of heartless act is absolutely unforgivable. The flowers of Mt. Atago are blooming to be loved by all the citizens, and even the personal belongings of a specific person cannot be removed to make money. I hope that this kind of behavior will never happen again.

The walking guide pamphlet has been completed   (2019.04.05)

The pamphlet "Atagoyama Walking Guide" created by the Atago Forest and Greenery Association has been completed. The 12-page booklet contains a walking map, nature centered on seasonal plants, the history and culture of Mt. Atago, and an introduction to temples and shrines.
It will be available in public places such as ward offices and public halls in the near future. I think it will help you when you take a walk around Mt. Atago.

Horsetail wild cherry tree is in full bloom now  (2019.04.05)

Tsukushiyama cherry tree (Chikushiyama cherry tree) is in full bloom now. If you want to see it, please do so as soon as possible. The place where it is in bloom is described in the description of the image, so please click the image.
Horsetail wild cherry tree is a cherry tree endemic to this area and is considered to be a subspecies of wild cherry tree. The flowers are whiter than the Yoshino cherry tree, and reddish leaves appear at the same time. It is also characterized by thick branches. Currently, more than a dozen trees have been confirmed on Mt. Atago, but all of them are surrounded by evergreen trees and cannot receive sufficient sunlight, and the tree vigor is declining and the situation is severe. The Atago Forest and Greenery Conservation Society is preparing a project to make Atagoyama a village of wild cherry trees with the aim of reviving this wild cherry tree.
(Postscript: According to the tentative identification of the experts after that, the tree in the above image may be "Yamazakura".)

Atagoyama is already spring (2019.02.27)

It is around this time that the weather changes rapidly after the first spring blows, but this year's Atagoyama seems to sprout and bloom earlier than usual. Kawazuzakura on the northern slope of Mt. Atago, in the middle of the Atagoyama sightseeing road, is already in full bloom, and the rape blossoms (white mustard) that can be seen from the middle of Mt. It is a carpet. Henbit deadnettle has already begun to bloom. In the forest, the flowers of camellia japonica and the red fruits of Ardisia crenata are still proud of their redness, but gray herons have already gathered and are preparing for nesting with a unique cry on the tree. Why don't you visit Mt. Atago on a sunny day?

Kawazuzakura has blossomed (2019.02.08)

IMG_6433.JPG
Although the severe cold continues, the footsteps of spring are steadily approaching Mt. Atago. Wild grasses have begun to sprout, and greenery is spreading here and there, but Kawazuzakura, which is the first to inform early spring, has blossomed. It will take some time before it is in full bloom, but why don't you go see this "Spring News"? The location is along the Atagoyama sightseeing road on the northern slope of Mt. Atago.

The precious green has disappeared again (2019.01.29)

When I looked at Mt. Atago from Meiji-dori, I saw the mountain covered with deep green closest to it (the red circle area in the image on the left), and all the trees including old cherry trees were cleared at the end of last year. It was done and disappeared. It used to be an abandoned house that had decayed and was about to collapse, but in the fall of last year, it was told that the site would be sold and a new building would be built. At the Atago Forest and Greenery Association, I knew that the people who originally lived on this site valued the trees, and this site is a steep slope, making it a special caution area for sediment disasters. Since it is a designated "dangerous" place, when constructing a new building, it is possible to avoid sudden cutting work and avoid cutting down trees as much as possible, rather to make the greenery of Mt. Atago. I offered to make the building a building that was only utilized, and I had a place for discussion, but as a result, it was cleared. At the Mt. It is a pity that the situation has led to the further reduction of the forest and greenery of Mt. Atago.

Abragiku is in full bloom now !! It's in full bloom   (2018.11.30)

Abragiku is a typical Satoyama plant of the Asteraceae family, which can be seen everywhere (in western Japan) blooming yellow from late autumn to winter, but it is no longer seen in the city. Even at Atagoyama, where you can see this abragiku, it has decreased sharply due to the influence of mowing the grass on the side of the road. The Atago Forest and Greenery Association has been working on raising seedlings and transplanting seedlings in an attempt to revive them.
Now, you can see the full bloom of Abragiku near the first hairpin curve at the entrance of Atagoyama Tourist Road (behind the housing exhibition hall) on the north slope of Mt. Atago. It's still small and far from using the word "appreciation", but it's worth seeing. We recommend that you take this opportunity to visit us. A part of the flowering slope collapsed during the heavy rain in summer, and now it is covered with blue sheets and it is unsightly, but it is a pity that the abragiku planted there has disappeared. That's right. Eventually, I hope that this slope will be covered with a whole yellow color.
Abragiku was named because it was once soaked in oil and used as a wound medicine, but it is also called Shimakangiku or Hamakangiku. The Makino Botanical Encyclopedia uses the traditional Japanese name "Abragiku" because its distribution is not limited to "islands" and "beach".

In addition, trees have been cut down (90 trees have been cleared).   (2018.10.21)

I've been late to tell you, but it's a shame. At the end of August, 90 trees, including several large trees, were cleared just outside the Special Green Area Conservation. The location where the trees were cut is the steep slope indicated by the red arrow on the map. The reason for logging is that the trees on the slope could have fallen to the houses below due to a typhoon, but there remains a great question as to whether it was necessary to "clear-cut". This place is a dangerous place originally designated as a sediment-related disaster warning special area (and sediment-related disaster warning area). It is not just a symptomatic treatment such as cutting a tree because it is dangerous, but it is necessary to consider disaster prevention measures from a comprehensive perspective, such as the decrease in water retention capacity due to clear cutting of trees and the effect on the surface layer due to bare land. Should have to. It seems necessary to review and take measures from the aspect of safety in the future.
In addition, since it was a precious forest just outside the special green area conservation area, logging should be limited to trees that are considered necessary for disaster prevention, and there is no need to clear-cut.
Although it is separate from this tree felling, a new factory called "Ishibakuzaka Farm Project" is under construction on the slope on the east side of the place where all the trees were cleared (two images below). It is a business that develops toilets and hydroponics in the event of a disaster. The site is a place where rape blossoms were in full bloom in spring (image on the right of the map). It is said that the factory will be constructed without changing the current terrain (development that changes the terrain will be subject to examination and permission by the local government), and land preparation work has already been carried out. It is said that discussions are currently being held between local residents and businesses, but as a group to protect, we would like to take measures in the future to protect the greenery and environment of Mt. Atago.

Great effect of bamboo grove maintenance! Fireworks viewing in the precincts of Atago Shrine (2018.08.04)

The precincts of Atago Shrine are a great viewing spot for the fireworks display held at Momochihama, but it is also a place where you can enjoy the fireworks display held at Ohori Park. It's a little far from Ohori Park, so you can't expect the power, but you can fully enjoy the beautiful fireworks. Therefore, at the fireworks display held on August 1, this year, far more than 300 people rushed to the precincts of Atago Shrine, and the precincts were full of people.
However, the view from this precinct to Ohori Park has been largely blocked by the infested Madake for many years, and it has not been possible to enjoy the "Ohori Park Fireworks Festival". The Mamoru-kai decided to cut down and maintain the bamboo grove with the aim of reviving the Satoyama forest. First, from January to March, the madake that spread under the precincts of Atago Shrine and obstructed the view was cut down. As a result, the visibility from the shrine precincts to Ohori Park has been greatly improved, and everyone can see the fireworks display.

Due to heavy rain during this period, a landslide occurred on Mt. Atago! (2018.07.09)
Due to the torrential rain during this period, a landslide occurred on Mt. Atago. At the first hairpin curve on the Atagoyama sightseeing road on the northern slope of Mt. Atago, the steep slope on the upper side of the road collapsed with a width of about 20 meters. Fortunately, the landslides and rockfalls were stopped by the prevention net created by the landslide prevention work carried out last year, and there was no impact on the road. Almost the entire area of Mt. Atago was designated as a steep slope collapse danger zone, and this landslide was also designated as a sediment-related disaster special caution area. The collapse of earth and stone is caused by the surface layer of the slope formed by clear-cutting trees by construction, and the collapse prevention net stretched on the surface of the slope collapsed gently.

The baby raccoon dog is here (2018.07.09)
In the evening when it was getting dark, a baby raccoon dog appeared near the restaurant "Yohira". When people try to get closer, they don't run away in a hurry. I was supposed to be with my parents, but did I get lost? I'm a little worried because I'm thin and have a skin disease (scabies caused by mites).
It seems to be seen occasionally on Mt. Atago, but most of them are at midnight. It is said that it often appears beside the sweets shop "Iwaiya". They also steal food from local cats.
I was able to take a picture, so I will introduce it.

A rare mushroom was growing-Akadamaki Nugasatake (2018.06.24)
I found a rare mushroom in the place where the bamboo grove was cut down. It is a mushroom wearing a white mesh lace-shaped skirt, and is a species called Akatamakinugasatake (Akatama Kinugasatake). Stinkhorn family Stinkhorn genus. It is a mushroom that appears in bamboo forests (rarely broad-leaved forests) during the rainy season (or autumn). The beginning (young fungus) is shaped like a reddish-brown chicken egg. After that, the tip is torn and grows, and then the skirt (bacterial net) grows and becomes an elegant figure. When it matures, it emits mucus containing spores, gives off a strange odor, attracts small flies, etc., and carries spores. When approaching the place where it grows, a strange odor similar to the smell of fruit drifts.
Although it is a member of the Kinugasatake, which is said to be the "queen of mushrooms," "Kinugasatake (bamboo 荪)" is a high-class ingredient that is listed at the top of the four major edible mushrooms "Shichin" in Chinese cuisine. It also includes Phallus indusia.

The dedication of Chikuzen Biwa is planned.
It is said that Kagura dance will be performed by Kanemi Hanayagi of Natori Hanayagi, but this time the new performance of Chikuzen Biwa "Myth: Susano Onomikoto" will be performed by Mine Seiryu Chikuzen Biwa Preservation Society. It will be performed by the teacher, Choka Ogata, a Biwa Joruri player. Why don't you take this opportunity to participate in the Otojiro Inari Festival. It is said that the large ginkgo tree that runs through the roof of the shrine is "a power spot where you can get" ki (tree) "when you hold the trunk." Would you like to try this too?
It is said that the history of Chikuzen Biwa dates back to the blind priest Biwa 1200 years ago, and a monument to the birthplace of Chikuzen Biwa is built at the Jojuin near Nishitetsu Hirao Station. Chikuzen Biwa, which was revived in the middle of the Meiji era, dominated the world in the early Showa period, and has continued to this day. By the way, Mr. Ogata, a player from the Faculty of Law, Seinan Gakuin University, has been active nationwide while serving as a Biwa Joruri player of the Ningyo Joruri-za "Chikuzen Gaku Koiza", which was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, including Chikuzen Biwa from the age of 13. Gray Heron and Great Egret are starting to raise children (2018.06.05)
Now, the heron's child-rearing has begun on Mt. Atago, and the noisy cry peculiar to the baby heron is echoing. However, it seems that there are still many parent birds holding eggs in their nests. The leaves are so prosperous this year that it is difficult to see the nests and even the parent herons. The bark of the baby heron sounds good, but it is hopeless to capture and copy it. It seems that we have to wait for it to grow a little more.
The flowers of Satoyama are in full bloom now, and the Great Egret is also nesting (2018.04.12)
After the cherry blossom viewing has settled down, there is no longer any traffic jam on Mt. Atago, but it's spring time. It is the season when satoyama plants bloom. The rare gentian is also spreading pretty flowers. Satoyama wildflowers are not flashy, but if you stop and look at them, they are quite good. The climate is also great for a walk. This is the first step in efforts to restore the diverse vegetation of Mt. Atago. Worked on logging and maintenance of the bamboo grove spreading to the south of the Atago Shrine precincts
(2018.01.25 )
On January 20, the Mamorukai worked on the first logging and maintenance of bamboo forests, and 41 people participated. If the forests and forests are not maintained for a long period of time, the bamboo grove will spread and the diversity of vegetation will be lost. Bamboo grove stands out in several places on Mt. Atago, especially at the southern foot of Atago Shrine, where Madake has eroded widely. It blocks the view of the city. Not only does the bamboo grove hinder the growth of other vegetation, but there is also a large amount of large and small garbage left under the feet, so the Mamorukai decided to work on logging and maintenance of the bamboo grove. Bamboo spreads on the rhizomes and stores nutrients, so it is very difficult to sprout new buds and eliminate them even if they are cut. This year, we set the goal of deciding the direction of future recommendations and acquiring bamboo forest logging methods and techniques by starting the process. For this reason, we asked Mr. Shiga of NPO Green City Fukuoka for technical guidance this time.

Did the boar disappear? Badger debuts for the first time instead? (2017.11.16)
Recently, according to the residents in the vicinity of Mt. Atago, wild boars have disappeared. There was news that a wild boar was running on Marina Street in front of Atago Elementary School at midnight, but it may be related. When I went to see the place where the wild boar was baiting before, I can't see any trace of the new wild boar catching. Instead, there were numerous traces of prey, believed to be from another animal, apparently not a wild boar. It's much smaller than the one by the wild boar. I can't even see the footprints. From the stories of the residents and the circumstantial evidence, it seems good to think that the wild boar has moved somewhere.
It's not a substitute, but recently, new badgers have come to be seen. By the way, raccoon dogs and badgers are similar in appearance, including ecology, but they have different faces, so they can be distinguished. In fact, badgers are Mustelidae and raccoon dogs are Canines, which are completely different animals. Raccoon dogs have been living on Mt. Atago for a long time, and they sometimes come to people for food in the middle of the night.
The autumn of Mt. Atago is deepening, so why not go out to pick up the castanopsis (2017.10.25)
Full-scale autumn is coming to Mt. Atago . Although it is a little, autumn leaves can be seen. It's not as flashy as spring, but you can enjoy autumn flowers. The heat is far away and it is a perfect season to take a walk. Why don't you go out?
The strong wind of Typhoon Jebi blew off the twigs and leaves of the trees of Mt. Atago, and some of the large branches and trunks were broken. The ground and roads were filled with twigs and leaves, but there were a lot of acorns in them. Of the acorns, the vertebrates (Castanopsis sieboldii, Japanese Chinquapin, Lithocarpus edulis) can be eaten raw. The small size of the fruit is difficult, but it is slightly sweet, and if you eat it after roasting, the sweetness will increase. Lithocarpus edulis tastes a little less, but it is delicious when processed into rice cakes. Unfortunately, other acorns cannot be eaten unless they are properly treated, such as by exposing them to water. Why don't you go to Mt. Atago, pick up the fruit of the castanopsis and taste it? Castanopsis sieboldii, Japanese Chinquapin, or their hybrids are easily distinguishable from other acorns and can be picked up by anyone. As you can see in the image, the shape of the "hakama" is different. Also, the ripe fruit is shining black. The main spots for "picking up the fruit of the castanopsis" are the preserved trees on the side of the second parking lot of Atago Shrine, on the stairs (Sakurazaka) going down from Atago Shrine to Kannondenji Temple, and on the mountain top of Mt. Washio where Washio Castle used to be. For example, a square.
There is a chestnut tree on Mt. Atago. According to the locals, I used to go picking chestnuts when I was a kid. I tried to find out if there are any chestnut trees left. In the forest, the Fagaceae trees are large and thick, and it is extremely difficult to find the chestnut tree, and it is not clear. However, I was able to confirm about three places where acorns (so-called acorns) have fallen on the southwestern slope below Washioyama Yamagami Square. I couldn't find out which tree was the chestnut by looking around, but I was able to pick up a reasonable amount of chestnuts. The chestnuts are quite large and do not seem to be the so-called "Yamaguri" or "Shiba chestnuts", which are native chestnuts. However, this place is a steep slope, and just below it is a vertical cliff of the Meinohama quarry site, which is an extremely dangerous place, so unfortunately it is recommended to stay away.
