Geology of Atago-yama

Atagoyama, located in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City, is the main part of the Atagoyama hills distributed from the left bank of the Muromi River to Odo Park located in the west-northwest. is. The entire Atagoyama is formed by the Meinohama Formation, which is mainly composed of massive medium-coarse sandstone of the Paleogene Pure Sea Formation, and fossils such as shellfish can be found here and there. Below this Meinohama Formation, the Atago Formation, which is not exposed on the surface of the earth but forms part of the Fukuoka coalfield area, is distributed. From the Taisho era to the early 1960s, the Sawara coal mine (Meinohama coal mine), which mines coal from the Atago Formation, prospered, and tunnels ran vertically and horizontally under Mt. Atago.
