Atago is a mountain made of the Meinohama Formation, which is made of Paleogene sandstone, but the Atago Formation below it contains abundant coal. The existence of coal in the western part of Fukuoka City was known before the Meiji era, but it began to be used as a coal mine in the latter half of the Meiji era. Coal mining began by Meinohama Fukuoka Coal Mine Co., Ltd. (currently Sawarise) under Mt. Atago in 1914 (Taisho 3), and its wellhead is now a self-supporting condominium for middle-aged and elderly people, "Healthcare Sawara" (opposite Shoppers Mall Marina Town). ) Was near. On Toyohama (north of Mt. Atago, on the Hakata Bay side), the site of the Hayara Coal Mine (Mt. And 8000 people lived there. The Sawara coal mine closed in 1962 (Showa 37), and now its vestiges are not left anywhere.
