Chikuzen Atagoyama Tile Sutra

Chikuzen Atagoyama today. The scriptures were carved into a clay tablet, baked, and buried in the ground with the desire to convey the scriptures until the time when Maitreya Bodhisattva appeared. Many were made in the late 11th to 12th centuries (late Heian period). The tile sutras excavated at the southeastern foot of Atago Shrine are different from the general tile sutras found elsewhere, and the sutras are written on only one side. The fact that the old roof tiles with the Lotus Sutra burned on Mt. Atago was seen in Kaibara Ekken's Chikuzen Kokuryo Fudoki, but at that time it was thought to be the old roof tiles of Tandai Castle (see below) .

Mr. Kouka Takano, a researcher in the field, believed in the existence of Atagoyama Kawara and began excavation and collection work enthusiastically from the early 1950s, and summarized it in the record as "Study of Chikuzen Atagoyama Kawara" (1974). , Spread the existence of Atagoyama tile sutra to the world. Mr. and Mrs. M's house, which is said to have actively cooperated with the excavation, still exists. Of the images below, the images other than the current photo are taken from this book.

"It is located in the Tatsumi of Urayama, near the Atago shrine, and there is a mountain that goes out to the south. There is a flat land on it. If the tiles had the characters of the Hokke 經 printed on them, they would be taken away and the tiles wouldn't disappear now.
