History and culture of Mt. Atago
Atagoyama is blessed with abundant greenery even though it is in the city, and it can be said to be a green oasis for Fukuoka City. At the same time, it is surrounded by cliffs and was once located on the seashore, so it has a history of being a mountain of worship as a sacred place rooted in the Japanese view of nature and religion. Since the early modern period, Atagoyama has become a place visited by many worshipers, but it has also continued to be a satoyama related to the lives of the people living around it. Coal mines prospered in the midst of modernization, and the appearance of Mt. Atago changed completely, but after the decline of the coal industry in the 1960s, it was surrounded by residential areas and was crowded with worshipers during the New Year. It became a mountain. However, on the other hand, we cannot forget that the wave of development has eroded us and we are exposed to situations where it is difficult to protect greenery and culture.
