Meinohama Stone

Atagoyama in Fukuoka is a mountain made entirely of Paleogene sandstone. Since this sandstone is easy to process, it was also used for the construction of ancient burial mounds, and has been used extensively under the name of "Meinohama stone" since ancient times, such as being used for retaining walls and walls. Most of the rocks that can actually be seen on Mt. Atago have a reddish-brown color due to weathering, but they are originally bluish gray. Most of the area around Mt. Atago has become a quarry for Meinohama stone, but it is no longer mined. Since the remains of the quarry are left as they are as steep cliffs, there is a risk of collapse, and prevention fences etc. are installed.
