Atago Mountain Plants-Tree 5 (Ta-te)

This is a page of trees (flowers are displayed on a separate page for each season). Tree names are listed in order of Aiueo on this page. However, typical trees are displayed at the beginning of each page. Images of trees with flowers and fruits are also displayed on seasonal pages. Chikushiyama cherry blossoms. Rosaceae Cerasus. Also known as Tsukushizakura. It is a subspecies of wild cherry tree, distributed in the coastal areas of western and southern Kyushu (partly in the Chugoku region), and is considered to be the coastal type of wild cherry tree. The horsetail wild cherry tree, which has been confirmed throughout Mt. Atago, is a rare species that can become extinct, with only about 20 trees being weakened by the sun being blocked by broad-leaved trees.
The differences from wild cherry blossoms are that the petals are slightly larger and whiter, the bracts at the base of the flower are larger and firmer, the young branches are whitish and thicker, and the shoots are brownish yellowish green. There are also some, and it is difficult to distinguish them.
At the Mamoru-kai, we aim to make Atagoyama a village of horsetail wild cherry trees, (1) increase seedlings with cuttings, and (2) cut down and organize the broad-leaved trees around the wild cherry trees with the permission of the city to improve the sunlight. I am doing.

Horsetail wild cherry blossoms blooming on the west slope of a small mountain with the ruins of Ropeway Yamagami Station.
The flat top of the small mountain where the ropeway Yamagami station remains is a square where cherry blossoms bloom, but the horsetail wild cherry blossoms bloom near the entrance.
The horsetail wild cherry tree, like the wild cherry tree, blooms with leaves prior to the Yoshino cherry tree.
Horsetail wild cherry blossoms. Horsetail wild cherry has slightly larger petals and is whiter than wild cherry. The color of the young branches is also whitish. However, the distinction is quite difficult.
The trunk of Tsukushizakura. It cannot be distinguished from wild cherry blossoms only by the trunk.
Logging work around Tsukushiyama cherry tree (November 2019). The horsetail wild cherry tree is surrounded by broad-leaved trees, making it difficult for the sun to hit, and most of the trees are weakened. Therefore, with the permission of the city, we started to cut down and prun the surrounding hardwoods by a specialist to secure the sunlight.
Horsetail wild cherry forest after logging work. In the place where four horsetail wild cherry trees grow together, the surrounding broad-leaved trees were cut down and pruned, and the bamboo grove was removed (previous image). The sunlight has been dramatically improved.
Flowering in the next spring after logging. The surrounding broad-leaved forests have been reorganized to dramatically improve the sunlight. It cannot be immediately determined whether this is the effect, but it has begun to bloom vigorously.
