椨. An evergreen tree of the genus Machilus thunbergii in the family Lauraceae. Also known as Inugus, Tamagus, Yamagus, Tsumama, etc. Bluebottle food tree. Powder the bark and knead it with water (gourd powder) to make incense sticks. When the bark is decocted, it becomes a birch dye (Honbakihachi dye).
Machilus thunbergii fruit. It ripens in summer at about 1 cm and turns black-purple. The floral pattern is often reddish. The flesh is green and soft, and the taste is close to that of avocado (avocado is also Lauraceae).
タブノキの開花。3月下旬撮影。冬芽から若葉とともに花芽も成長し開花する。この画像はまだ一部が咲き始めたところだが、一斉に開花することはない(集散花序)。また、タブノキの花は咲き始めには雌しべが目立ち、雄しべは熟していない(雌性期、雌性先熟)。その後花は一旦閉じ、再度開いた時には花柱は引っ込み、花粉を付けた雄しべが立ち上がる(雄性期)。その後、花はしぼむ。一つの花で雌花と雄花とがこのように変化するのを雌雄異熟という。
タブノキの果実。1cm程度で夏に熟して黒紫色になる。花柄は赤みを帯びることが多い。果肉は緑色で柔らかく、アボガドに近い味とのこと(アボガドもクスノキ科)。
