This is a page of trees (flowers are displayed on a separate page for each season). Tree names are listed in order of Aiueo on this page. However, typical trees are displayed at the beginning of each page. Images of trees with flowers and fruits are also displayed on seasonal pages. Cedar. An evergreen conifer of the genus Sugi in the family Cupressaceae. An old plant that appeared in the Mesozoic era and is endemic to Japan. It is widely planted as a building timber, but it has a high water content and is easily deformed. Since the roots grow deeply, it helps prevent sediment-related disasters. February to April is the flowering period, which causes pollinosis, but in recent years, varieties with less pollen have been developed and are becoming widespread. The bark is used for the outer walls and roof, and the leaves are used for incense sticks. Atagoyama has been planted in only one place, and it remains as a remnant of that.
Sugi leaf. Sugi and cypress have similar bark, and it is difficult to distinguish them just by looking at the trunk. However, the leaves of Sugi are hard, rod-shaped and pointed, while the leaves of Japanese cypress are soft, flat and rounded, so they can be easily distinguished.
