Yoshino cherry tree. Prunus × yedoensis'Somei-yoshino' . An interspecific hybrid of Edohigan and Oshima cherry, a cultivar that was created at the end of the Edo period and has spread nationwide since the Meiji period. Strictly speaking, the Japanese name of the hybrid is "Yoshino cherry tree", and the name of the cultivar given to one of them cultivated as an excellent species is "Yoshino cherry tree", not "Yoshino cherry tree" equal to "Yoshino cherry tree". Since it is a cloned species increased by grafting, it blooms all at once in the same area at the same time and disperses all at once. Unlike wild cherry blossoms, leaves come out after the flowers bloom.
In 1918 (Taisho 7), 360 Yoshino cherry trees were donated to Mt. Atago and became one of the famous cherry blossom spots in Fukuoka City. However, the number has decreased over time, and unfortunately it only remains around Sakurazaka and Atago Shrine, and some trees with weakened vigor are conspicuous.

At the base of the leaves of Somei Yoshino, there is a pair of nectaries (or nectaries, extrafloral nectaries) like bean grains, from which nectar with a refreshing sweetness is produced. Although it is a small amount, it seems to be easy to appear on young branches. The nectaries of other cherry trees are usually distinguishable because they are on the leaf axis away from the base of the leaf. It is thought to attract ants and protect them from other pests.
The nectaries of the leaves are organs found in cherry blossoms and Mallotus japonicus.

This image is the nectary of Prunus speciosa (?). In cherry blossoms other than Somei Yoshino, such as wild cherry blossoms, the nectaries are generally located on the petioles away from the base of the leaves. The nectary is located at the base of the leaf, which is a characteristic of Yoshino cherry tree, and it is a point to distinguish whether it is Yoshino cherry tree or not.

By mid-May, the cherries will begin to color. When fully ripe, it tastes good, although not comparable to the size of cherries on sale.
