Wild walnut. A deciduous tree of the genus Platycarya in the family Walnut. Also known as Nobunoki, Dokugurumi (named because it was used to grind toxic leaves into rivers and ponds to catch fish), Sarnokushi (from the shape of scales). Monoecious. Distributed west of the Tokai region. Tannins extracted from the bark are used for tanning.
Nogurumi flowers (inflorescences) and fruit ears. Around June, inflorescences (one female flower in the center and several male flowers) are attached upward to the tip of the branch. Nogurumi is the only walnut that has inflorescences pointing upwards. The fruits are completely different from other walnuts. Around August, yellow-green fruit ears shaped like pine cones are formed, and in autumn they turn dark brown. There is a fruit of about 5 mm with wings in the gap between the sharp and hard scales.
