cinnamon. Also known as Nikki. An evergreen tree of the genus Cinnamomum in the family Lauraceae. It's similar to Yabunikei, but it tastes bad when you chew the stem of the leaf. The place of origin is Indochina, and it entered Japan via China during the Edo period. The branches and leaves are fragrant and are used as fragrances (bark is cinnamon bark and twigs are cinnamon). It is also the main ingredient of keishito in Chinese medicine. Cinnamon with a similar scent is the bark of the closely related Ceylon Nikkei, which has a milder scent than Nikkei.
