Ilex rotunda. An evergreen tree of the genus Ilex in the family Aquifoliaceae. Dioecious. Also known as Fukurashiba. Old leaves fall when new shoots emerge around April. The leaves are dark green and have a glossy surface. The difference from Ilex is that the branches (and petioles) of Ilex are yellowish green, but Ilex rotunda is black-purple. This color was named after the iron color. The branches have blunt ridges. The bark is used for birdlime and dyes.
Female plants (without male plants) bear bright red fruits of about 5 mm in autumn. It is popular as a garden tree because it becomes a color in winter.
