Atago Mountain Plants-Tree 3 (Ki-ko)

This is a page of trees (flowers are displayed on a separate page for each season). Tree names are listed in order of Aiueo on this page. However, typical trees are displayed at the beginning of each page. Images of trees with flowers and fruits are also displayed on seasonal pages. Click on an image to see it in full view, or lay it down to enlarge it.
Chestnut. Beech family Chestnut. It is dioecious and blooms from May to June. From September to October, a few fruits are borne in acorns with squid. It seems that there are two or three chestnut trees from the falling squid, but so far it has not been possible to identify which tree.
When the fruit (solid) ripens, the acorn tears and appears. Wild chestnuts are called Yamaguri (Yamaguri) or Shibaguri (Shibaguri) and have smaller fruits than cultivated chestnuts. Atago mountain chestnuts have large fruits and are thought to be cultivars.
