Hiiragi or Himesakaki. An evergreen small tree of the genus Eurya in the family Pentaphylacaceae. Male and female strains. Native to China. The leaves are thick, leathery and shiny. Also known as Bishako, Bisha, Hendara, Sasaki, etc. The flowering season is from March to April. Many small cream-colored, pot-shaped flowers bloom like hanging on a branch. There is a strong odor. It is used for Shinto rituals as a substitute for Sakaki such as tamagushi. Compared to Cleyera japonica, the leaves are smaller and the branches and leaves are denser.
