Atago Forest Preservation Association

It is in the middle of the back approach of Atago Shrine, commonly known as Sakurazaka. Eighty-eight places in Kyushu, 85th bill place. The principal image is the Atago Gongen Shogun Jizo Daibosatsu. Kanonji was originally the inner temple of Washio Shrine. When Atagoyama was called Washioyama, Torinji was built in 955 (Tenryaku 9) as a Bettobo of Washio Shrine, and then Atago Gongen was erected by Tadayuki, the ancestor of the Kuroda clan. Enmanji Temple was built as a shrine. Atago Shogun Jizo was dedicated as the main Buddha of this temple. After the Kuroda family's turmoil, Atago-sha became the main shrine, Washio-sha became the side shrine, and Torinji was merged with Enmanji. Enmanji was abandoned in 1901 (Meiji 34), and at that time, Atago Shogun Jizo was moved to Kannon-do, which was located at the site of Torinji Temple. This Kannon-do is the predecessor of Washioyama Kannon-denji Temple.

The Buddhas disappeared and were damaged by the fire in the main hall in 1987, but at that time, the principal image was put in a box as a permanent secret Buddha and placed on a pedestal. The principal image, which is enshrined in the main hall wearing armor and riding a horse, is a newly created one. The ginkgo beside the main hall has burn marks from the fire.

The 88 pilgrimage sites were built by a nun named Jinin who lived at the beginning of the Meiji era, and the remnants of the stone Buddhas are lined up on the mountain side. In addition, there are many things that are said to have been collected by a volunteer named Sumiyo Banchu (deceased) who was scattered around the area. The Yoshino cherry tree in the precincts is wonderful.
